On December 10, a new doughnut shop opened in Capitol Hill. Voodoo Doughnut stands out among others with its collection of wild and creative doughnuts.
It all started in Portland, Oregon, in the early 2000s. Friends Kenneth Pogson and Tres Shannon realized that the one thing Portland was lacking was a nice doughnut shop. They rented a small shop, and with help of friends and family, worked to achieve “world doughnut domination,” as they put it. The shop grew in popularity very quickly as people across the nation saw Voodoo Doughnut featured on their favorite reality and morning shows. The attention on the shop had constant lines outside their doors.
As the doughnut shop’s popularity increased, it wasn’t long before it began branching out. In 2008, Pogson and Shannon opened their first shop and have been expanding stores across the nation since. Today, the famous doughnut shop opened up their most recent location in Capitol Hill here in Seattle.
The Messenger had to see what this doughnut craze was all about. Opening day was just as chaotic as expected, with parking spaces lacking and lines out the door, even at 8 PM, when my friend and I went. The inside of the store was small, made for a grab-and-go experience, which is probably why the lines were always out the door. Though the upbeat staff made up for the line as they were smiling and dancing while still making sure people got their doughnuts as fast as they could. As they worked to get everyone their doughnuts, they also made sure to make time to give donut recommendations, all three of which my friend and I ordered.
“Dirt” was the first doughnut recommended, it had vanilla frosting and was coated in Oreos. A safe choice from their selection, “You can never go wrong with oreos” as my friend said. The second doughnut ordered was “Oh Captain My Captain.” By the time we took a bite, it was stale, which to be fair, could be a result of the time of day. The final popular doughnut recommended was the Voodoo Doll, a doll shaped doughnut with chocolate frosting, a raspberry jelly filling, and a pretzel sticking out of its torso. If you like jelly doughnuts, this is definitely for you. However it was not for me, jelly caught me by surprise.
Overall, Voodoo Doughnut was very interesting with its one of a kind flavors. I am super happy that Voodoo Doughnut came to Seattle, as I’ve never had the opportunity to have some before. Personally, it’s not my favorite, but if I’m craving a sweet treat it’s definitely on my radar!
