The Garfield Drama department is giving it their all as they work on this season’s new show, Love loss and What I Wore, set to debut November 15. “It’s basically mini stories from several different women talking about their experiences of maturing over time,” Sabrina Ali said, this production’s stage manager. “Some scenes are funny and childish, other scenes are really sad and serious. You get a really mixed combination of emotions and different points of view,” Ali voiced. “ The story is about growth, maturity, and acceptance,” she continued. There are themes such as acceptance of “body issues that some characters had and relationship issues characters faced and how they grew from toxic relationships and family members” Ali compared Love Loss and What I Wore to her favorite movies, Shedevil and First Wives Club. “I just love these movies, and now it’s like I’m seeing a play version of the two,” Ali said. Ali also discussed the excitement behind the scenes for the show, “we ended up really enjoying connecting with [the characters], being immature and growing up.” Ali mentioned that it was also enjoyable for the cast to find some of the characters’ stories relatable.
Ilana Jacobson, Tech director of Love Loss and What I Wore, shared some of her insights on the decision of the fall play: “At first, most of us liked The Wolves best,” she said. Jacobson explained that The Wolves is a story about a girls soccer team dealing with the grief of a teammate who passed, and how it brought them together. “We felt that right now, Garfield was not ready to talk about grief, so we chose the other option.” The other option being Love Loss and What I Wore, Jacobson then elaborated on what the play is about and its themes. “At a glance, it might look like there’s not a lot going on but with how it’s been produced so far it’s really interesting to watch.” Jacobson said. “A story about middle aged women and their connection with their clothing and their mothers, tied together through monologues.” She continued to elaborate on the clothing aspect of the show, “Clothing defines us as people, so much of our personality and who we are shows through what we wear, I feel like that’s a big message of this [Love Loss and What I Wore],” Jacobson said.
Ali and Jacobson are both very excited for the premiere of Love Loss and What I Wore, set for November 15th. Garfield students have put in a lot of work for this production and are excited for their peers to be able to come out and appreciate it. As Ali said, “It’s beautiful. I love it so much. It’s a good story, hopefully people will see it.”
