This year, the sports world has been drastically changed by COVID-19. Professional sports have been delayed and attending games has been restricted. Despite these difficulties, sports events continue to entertain and engage fans. Let’s look back at some of the most memorable moments of the 2020 sports year!
Los Angeles Lakers win the NBA Finals
Despite the season’s delay in mid-March due to COVID-19, the success of the NBA bubble allowed the Finals to be played in early October at Orlando Walt Disney World. The Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Championships after defeating the 5th seed Miami Heat, 106-93 in game 6. This victory is the Lakers’ first NBA Championship in ten years.
Giannis Antetokounmpo wins NBA MVP
The Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo was named the 2019-20 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player in September. He has won NBA MVP in two consecutive seasons, making him the 12th player to earn this title in back-to-back seasons.
Antetokounmpo was also named the 2019-20 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, making him one of the only three players selected as Kia NBA MVP and Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
Chiefs first Super Bowl win in half a century
After 50 long years since their last Super Bowl victory, the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, FL in February. The Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20. This victory marks the Chiefs’ first win since Super Bowl IV and their first NFL Championship since joining the league.
Lamar Jackson wins NFL MVP
The Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback, Lamar Jackson, won the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award for his 2019 performance in a unanimous vote in February. Jackson became the second unanimous NFL MVP and the first MVP in the Ravens franchise history. At 22 years old, he became the youngest quarterback to win MVP.
Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series
The Dodgers became the MLB’s World Series Champions for the first time since 1988 in October. They won after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 in Game 6 at the Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
Derek Jeter voted into the Hall of Fame
Derek Jeter, from the New York Yankees, was voted into the 2020 Baseball Hall of Fame in January. He was one vote short of becoming the second player to be unanimously voted into the Hall of Fame. Jeter received 396 out of 397 votes from eligible members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America
Liverpool win their first Premier League title in 30 years
In June, Liverpool won their first Premier League title in 30 years. Liverpool has also won the Championships League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the World Club Cup in the last year, regaining their status as a top soccer club in England.
