Men’s Swim and Dive
Garfield High School’s Men’s Swim and Dive team participated in the State Championships on February 21 and 22 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Preliminary events occurred on Friday, followed by finals on Saturday. The team dedicated the entire season to preparing for this significant event, with practices held every morning before school and during breaks. State finalist Luke Lenvay highlighted the team’s sense of community, “We’re all great friends, very comfortable with each other, and lift each other up. It’s just fun to be at practice and at the meets.” He said. He also expressed pride in their relay performance, noting that he and his teammates were very satisfied with their performance.
Ultimate Frisbee
The State Championship against Roosevelt High School for Garfield High School’s Ultimate Frisbee team took place on the afternoon of February 9 at Foster High School Stadium, concluding with a score of 10-15. Despite the loss, team captain Nor Luloff expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “We were all really proud of how we played. Even if we didn’t accomplish our outcome goal of the season, we still became closer as a team and built a really strong community.” She noted that over the past few years, the team has focused on fostering a stronger sense of community. This year, Luloff observed, the team has been more successful in supporting and uplifting one another.
Wrestling
On February 20 and 21 at the Tacoma Dome, Garfield High School’s Wrestling team competed in the state championships. The team trained rigorously all season, utilizing various drills and training techniques to prepare for this significant event. Notably, junior wrestler Hadley Carscaddon was the sole Garfield athlete to secure a match victory at the state level this year. She reflected on the team’s supportive environment, “Everyone is super encouraging and supportive, and we talk all the time, even outside of the season.” She said. Impressively, Carscaddon was not only the only female wrestler from Garfield to qualify for state this year, but she also was the only Garfield wrestler to win a state match.
Basketball
Garfield High School’s Basketball teams have a storied history of excellence. The boys’ team have won the state championship 16 times since the school was founded in 1925, while the girls’ team has also secured the title on at least five occasions. This year, both teams have once again qualified for the State Championships. The girls’ team had their first state game on February 25 against Shorecrest High School, defeating them with a score of 50-46. Their following State Championship game was scheduled for March 1 against Mountain View at Mark Morris High School. The boys’ team has yet to compete in a state game this season with their first state game scheduled for March 1 against Liberty High School at Bellevue College.
