Curls are big, loud and vibrant compared to the sleek and subtle look of straight hair. Curly haired people often feel forced to conform to the straight haired ideals that society has deemed “acceptable,” which leaves us curly haired folks in a forever fight with our natural hair. Excessive amounts of heat from straightening can cause severe hair damage. Instead of continuing the straight trend, you should look into finding your own curl-sona.
A wash and go:
The key to a perfect wash n’ go is finding the right products for your texture or porosity. Whether it be wavy, curly, or kinky, rockin’ the ‘fro can come easy with just a few steps. First, you work on freshly washed hair, should be damp and detangled, the wetter the better. Then you can either finger coil your hair, or brush style it using one of the following: a Denman Brush, a comb, or a Tangle Teezer. Personally I have seen the best results from these as someone with 3b textured hair. If you have a kinkier texture above a 4a I’d definitely recommend using the Tangle Teezer! For products, find a good curl cream, oil, and mousse/gel. There is no special technique to putting in the product, but it should be done in the following order: curl cream, gel/mouse, then finish with an oil for shine. Either let air dry or go in with a diffuser. This style is done once a week, usually on wash day.
Twist out/twists:
For a twist out, the products are the same, however I would say using the Camille Rose twist cream which is specifically for this style. In-order to do this style, you’ll need to section your hair into small sections and twist two pieces of hair together going in with the curl cream on your section of hair then twisting them together. The smaller the twist the longer it will last, especially for thicker textured hair. You can take these twists out overnight and be left with a nice twist out which would look similar to a wash n’ go, or leave them in as a protective style. It just depends on how long you want them to last or how you want them to look. This low tension style is perfect and an easy look that can last a long time!
The slick back:
You know it well, classy, sleek, and fresh: The slick back. It pairs well with any outfit and is super easy. All you need is a hard bristle brush, good holding gel, a wax stick if you really want your flyaways tucked away, and an edge brush to add some flare to the style. Once tied up into a ponytail after slicking it back, you can either put it into a braid, bun or leave it as a pony tail. Would definitely advise you to do this style right before you wash your hair and pair it with oil in order to maximize length.
These styles are just a glimpse into some do’s you can do. There is a whole world and natural community that is out there to help navigate you to maximizing the potential of your curls. Whatever the texture may be, every single one is unique and beautiful in its own way which is the best part. Finding your own path is definitely a journey, but investing into it will forever change your life and outlook of yourself.
