As the new year kicks off, many make hopeful fitness resolutions but keeping them can be difficult for many reasons. While working out is mentally and physically rewarding, it can be hard to commit to a consistent schedule due to the time it takes up, and the cost. As a teenager, balancing exercise with school is a challenge, but there are easy and affordable opportunities for students in the Central District.
30-day pilates Youtube challenge:
Recently, pilates has become a very popular way to work out, but it is very pricey. Getting all the equipment and going to a studio can be more taxing than the workout itself. For those who still want the slow-burn satisfaction of pilates from their home, they should try to follow pilates instructors on YouTube. There are series of videos viewers can follow to stay consistent with their pilates goals. Some good instructors to look for on YouTube include Madeline Abeid, Move With Nicole, and Lidia Mera.Â
YMCA membership:
A great resource that is close to Garfield is the Meredith Mathews YMCA. Their facilities include a basketball court, pool, weight room, and more. The Y is a great option for those who want a gym membership but do not want to pay the full price. The teen membership for ages 14-17 is $68/month compared to the $91/month adult membership.
Buddy workouts:
Sometimes, working out can become bland and boring, causing many to fail their new year’s resolutions. A simple solution to this problem is to find someone to work out with– a workout buddy! Whether it’s a friend or a family member, having someone to suffer with in the weight room can be very motivating.
Cappy’s boxing gym:
On MLK and Union St. is Cappy’s Boxing Gym. While this option is on the pricier side it can be great for those looking for a healthy way to express their anger. Cappy’s offers classes and personal coaching and is very beginner friendly.
Walks:
Seattle is filled with natural beauty that can be viewed from many parks around the city. Getting outside and taking a walk or run in one of these parks can be not only good physically, but mentally refreshing. Good places around Garfield to explore include along Lake Washington near Madrona Park, Volunteer Park, and a bit farther south, Seward Park.
